The “Hanging Church”, also called “El Moalaka church” is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Dimiane. Archaeologists at Cairo’s laboratory of the history of archeology date back a wooden specimen from the floor of Saint Mark church (at the Hanging church) to year 140–150 B.C.. However, some historians believe that the church goes back only to the late 3rd century and the beginning of the 4th century A.D.
It was called the Hanging Church because it is built over the Roman fortress on top of which has been put palm trees wood and stones to be the ground of the church. The roof of the church was made of wood in the shape of Noah’s Ark.
The interior is beautifully decorated with pointed arches, cedar panelling and translucent ivory screens.
